Is Your Home Ready for the Cheaper Batteries Program? A Practical Guide for Queensland Households
The Australian Government is making battery storage more affordable than ever. From 1 July 2025, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program will offer a discount of around 30% off the upfront cost of installing small-scale batteries for households and small businesses.
If you’re thinking about adding a battery to your existing solar setup—or building a new solar + battery system—this program could be your ticket to lower bills, greater energy independence, and smarter energy use. But before you jump in, let’s make sure your home is ready.
What Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
This national program is designed to help Australians store excess solar energy and use it when electricity demand is high—typically in the evening or during peak periods. It’s all about improving energy affordability, reducing pressure on the grid, and increasing the value of solar investments.
Here’s what the program includes:
- Around 30% upfront discount on eligible battery installations
- Available from 1 July 2025 across participating states and territories
- Applies to both homes and small businesses
- Covers new battery systems or adding capacity to an existing system (as long as it hasn’t previously received support under this program)
The discount applies to up to 50 kWh of usable battery capacity, with eligible systems ranging from 5 kWh to 100 kWh in total.
Intended Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, your home or small business needs to meet specific requirements:
✔ Battery Size
The battery system must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, with discounts applying to the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.
✔ Solar PV Requirement
Your battery must be installed alongside a new or existing rooftop solar system. This ensures you’re storing your own generated energy.
✔ Approved Products Only
Both your battery and inverter must be listed on the Clean Energy Council’s approved product list.
✔ Accredited Installer Required
Installation must be completed by an installer accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).
✔ VPP-Ready
If you’re connected to the grid, your battery must be capable of participating in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Participation is optional, but the system must be technically ready.
Why Add a Solar Battery Now?
Australia leads the world in rooftop solar uptake, but battery adoption still lags behind. This program is designed to change that—and with good reason.
Adding a battery to your solar setup allows you to:
- Use your own solar power at night
- Avoid buying expensive grid electricity during peak times
- Increase energy resilience and backup options
- Lower your annual electricity bills
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program makes it financially viable for many households who’ve held off due to the upfront costs.
Is Your Home Battery-Ready?
Before you jump on board, here’s what you’ll need to consider:
- Do you already have rooftop solar installed—or will it be installed along with your battery?
- Is your switchboard up to date and compliant?
- Do you have a suitable location for the battery (e.g., shaded, ventilated, secure)?
- Are you ready to use a Clean Energy Council-approved battery and an SAA-accredited installer?
Even if you’re unsure, a professional battery assessment can help. Leading providers like REA Solar offer free site inspections and eligibility checks to help you get started.
